Mullum teen a finalist at American Songwriters' Awards
MULLUMBIMBY teenager Sarah Buckley's take on the pitfalls of being into country music has earned her international recognition.
The 15-year-old's song Running Away was one of the five finalists in the teenager category of the 2014 American Songwriters' Awards.
The song was entered into the competition back in February and Sarah then forgot about the entry until she was notified by email that Running Away had made it to the final five.
"It was very exciting," she said.
Sarah said the song had been written about how mean people can be.
"Country music is not the coolest so it was written about that," she said.
Sarah has only been writing and performing music seriously for about four years but because her father is a musician she has always been surrounded by music and instruments.
"Dad showed everyone how to play the 12-bar blues at kindergarten show and tell," she said.
Sarah's passion for music was ignited when her older brother took her to the Tamworth Country Music Festival and she started taking part in talent shows.
Sarah is now part of The Buckleys, a country music band that includes her sister Molly, 12, brother Lachlan, 14, and father Mick Buckley on the drums.
While pleased to have earned recognition for Running Away, Sarah said songwriting was just one of the attractions of the industry.
She said she also enjoys performing, recording and producing film clips.
"It all goes hand in hand," she said.
The Buckleys have already moved on from the success of Running Away, with the band currently working on producing Sarah's latest offering, Best of the Best.
