Brutal contests in draining heat at tennis comp

THE heat was on - literally - for the second round of Northern Rivers Premier League tennis in Lismore on Saturday.

The change to mid-summer conditions caught some players by surprise and those who had long matches took on plenty of fluids to ensure they stayed hydrated.

Although a few players made short work of their opponents there were a few brutal encounters.

In the No 3 position William Bagnall (Murwillum-bah) and Eli McDermott (Lismore) took over an hour to complete their first set.

Both players have forged reputations for not giving an inch and it showed as they slogged out a gruelling contest. The older Bagnall won 6-4 6-3.

Brendon Moore again showed why he is the man to beat but not without a gallant effort from Murwill-umbah's Doug Skipper, who pushed him in the second before going down 1-6 3-6.

Ballina's Manu Rowe made light work of Lismore's Jaykob Rowe 6-1 6-0.

In an upset, Byron Bay's rising star, 15-year-old Louis Clark, had a convincing win 6-3 6-1 win over Nathan Moore of Lismore.

That effort earned Clark the player of the day award.

The third round will be played at Ballina Tennis Club courts on Saturday starting at 10.30am.
