Brush with fame
HAIRDRESSING students from Wollongbar TAFE will be on show next Wednesday night as they compete against each other armed with combs, scissors, hairspray and mannequins.
The Hair Mania expo night, sponsored by Matrix is all about the experience for the competing Certificate 2, 3 & 4 students, said teacher Brenda Mason.
Not only will the students gain extra skills in hairstyling, it will also be a fantastic opportunity to show potential employers their skills.
It's also an important part of developing the student's creative expression, said Ms Mason.
"The rules are, there are no rules. They can go a bit left-field, do things they mightn't be able to do in the mainstream, but can do on a mannequin," she said.
Certificate 3 student Danielle Ware said using mannequins allowed them to utilise a "trial and error" process in their education.
The prizes, which include cutting courses with Matrix, will no doubt encourage the students to attempt to out-do each other.
The judges for the competition will include independent industry professionals from local hair salons and the state educator from Matrix.
There is also a People's Choice category.
Keeping it in the family, the event will be catered by Nightcap Restaurant, which is operated by the TAFE's Events students.
