Brown snake kills puppy in suburban Toowoomba

A DOG owner has told of her heartache after her puppy was killed by a brown snake in Toowoomba.

The eastern brown - the second deadliest snake in the world - had been seen lurking near her street in Wilsonton, close to Toowoomba Aerodrome last night.

The owner - who asked to remain anonymous - said a neighbour spotted the snake.

Her puppy, which was not yet four-months-old, was bitten and later died.

Her neighbour, who witnessed the attack, went inside to phone for help and when he returned the snake had disappeared.

"After the kids went to bed I went out to have my nightly cuddle with her around 9.30pm and she was on the ground and couldn't move," the woman said.

"My neighbour came over and told me about the snake and had a look at her."

The German shepherd puppy threw up, had a muscle spasm and stopped breathing.

The woman said her children were devastated.

"I had to tell them this morning and all three broke down. My son has Asperges (syndrome) and was very attached to her."

Tips to keep your pets safe

  • If you do notice your dog barking at a snake, call it away and keep your eye on the snake, then call a licenced snake catcher.
  • If your dog sees a snake and you can't call it back, get the hose out and spray your dog to keep it away from the snake.
  • Just because it's winter don't consider that snakes are gone, they'll always be around.
  • Be aware that snakes don't hibernate, they go into brumation, which means they wake up and return to sleep.
