Determination delivers major league pennant to Brothers

WORKERS had the firepower but determination won the day for Brothers in a thrilling conclusion to the FNC Major League Baseball season.

Despite being outscored 30-21 in the best-of-three match series, Brothers were crowned premiers after winning two of the three games.

The Major League playoff series was part of a thrilling conclusion to the 2013 season at Lismore's Albert Park on Saturday.

Game one of the series was a low-scoring affair with Brothers winning 2-1.

The second game was a different story with Workers notching a decisive 18-7 triumph.

Workers dominated the second game with runs coming freely in six of the eight innings.

The highlight was a three-run homer by Scott McClelland while Jason Caught was another standout.

Best with the bat for Brothers was Paul Latta with three hits. Nathan Cunningham, Matt Buckley and Jake Muscat backed up with two hits each.

After the free-flowing action of game two, game three was a cliff-hanger with Brothers claiming victory 11-10 at the bottom of the ninth.

After a tight opening, Brothers took the lead in the fifth thanks to solid batting from Andrew Carrall, Nathan Cunningham, Buckley, Gahan and Wyatt.

Workers levelled in the sixth when Wayne Devlin tripled but some uncharacteristic errors in the outfield allowed Brothers to regain the lead.

Workers fought back to draw level at 10-all at the top of the ninth thanks to a home run from Dallas Knapp.

Brothers however were not to be denied.

With the title on the line, Paul Latta got on base and scored when Matt Wyatt singled to left field.

The grand finals in the other divisions were also played Saturday.

The under-16 decider was a thrilling affair with Brothers hanging on to beat Easts 9-6. Brothers also won the Division Two and under-20 finals.
