Brokeback Mountain the opera to open

A SPANISH opera inspired by Oscar winning movie Brokeback Mountain is set to open in Madrid later this month.

The tale of two cowboys, who fall in love in the American West, sparked controversy and became a box office hit when it opened in cinemas around the globe in 2005.

Spanish composer Charles Wuorinen told AFP the opera was about a typical "tragic" love story where two people want to have a kind of relationship, which at the time, was forbidden by society.

Brokeback Mountain the Opera opens on January 28 and is expected to tour London later in the year.
