Brisbane’s Horn backed for heavyweight title bid

Legendary commentator Bob "The Colonel" Sheridan believes Brisbane's Jeff Horn has all the credentials to be a serious contender for a welterweight world title.

The unassuming relief school teacher was brilliant in his TKO of hard-hitting American Randall Bailey at the Brisbane Convention Centre on Wednesday night, stopping the veteran 41-year-old in the seventh round.

Bailey was hyped up as one of the best boxers to come to Brisbane, and he looked every bit a former three-world title holder when he knocked down Horn in the third round.

But the way the 28-year-old recovered impressed Sheridan, who was calling the fight ringside with champion Australian boxer Daniel Geale.

"He (Horn) got caught one time and it was a hard knock-down. He was out on his feet," Sheridan told Australian Regional Media.

"That's the sign of a great championship-calibre fighter - because who's going to hit him any harder in that division, before recovering like that?"

Horn, ranked No.5 in the world going into the Brisbane fight, called out American WBO champion Jessie Vargas after beating Bailey. "I hope it's Jessie Vargas. There is a No.1 position vacant. If he wants to take me on, I'm happy to do it," Horn said.
