Bright new bus takes seniors to more places, more often

SENIORS can now enjoy more outings thanks to the brand new bright-purple Uniting Healthy Living bus.

Healthy Living for Seniors Goonellabah leisure and lifestyle coordinator Robyn Benham said the bus would offer participants more flexibility in their outings.

"It's great to have our own bus for everyone to enjoy," she said.

"Everyone loves seeing and doing new things and with our new wheels not only can we more easily collect participants from their home, we can now get out and about more."

Previously, Uniting Healthy Living borrowed the Caroona Facility bus.

The old bus was available four and a half days per week, but the new bus is usable up to six days.

Sharing a bus also meant clients at either facility were sometimes unable to go out into the community when they wanted.

Uniting Far North Coast service manager Tracy Glass said clients have already made suggestions on where they'd like to go in the new bus.

"They love going to Evans Head and having fish and chips in the park," she said.

"Another favourite is going down to New Italy, and sometimes they just want to go to the park and have a BBQ lunch ... it's all client driven.

"We've got a beautiful new artificial lawn ... today (participants) have chosen to have morning tea out there and then they're going to play ten pin bowls, then they're going to do golf."

Ms Glass said the bus service also benefited the participants' carers.

"It's a very intense role being a carer for a client in the community, it's 24/7," she said.

"They just need time to go to the hairdressers, do some shopping, their me time."

Uniting Healthy Living Goonellabah is located at 43 Phillip St.
