Bridging issue of life or death

IS THERE anything worse than a cranky Federal MP?

Member for Page Kevin Hogan is cranky but it's for a good reason, he tells us.

The topic is Kyogle's wooden bridges and the lack of funding council has received from the Federal Government for the $300m Bridge Renewal Program.

"We were obviously unsuccessful in round one of the program where Kyogle didn't receive any money for its bridges," Mr Hogan said.

"Since then we have done good work and the council has been working with a ministerial office staffer supporting them in their application for round two."

Mr Hogan said suggestions of changing the program's criteria had seen some changes accepted and taken on board.

"I am still working at getting some off-program funding for Minnies Bridge," he said.

"We are not there yet but I have not given up irrespective of what happens in round two."

Minnies Bridge has become a symbol of what could happen to the 200-plus wooden bridges in the Kyogle Shire if not properly maintained.

"Minnies Bridge has been closed for a while now," Kyogle Mayor Danielle Mulholland said.

"There is a problem with emergency services getting into the area as the alternate route is 45 minutes.

"It could be the difference between a house burning down or a person losing their life."

Ms Mulholland said both she and the federal member had been working well together on ensuring money would eventually come to Kyogle's bridges.

"I will never give up as I will continue to lobby (Deputy Prime Minister) Warren Truss for Kyogle," she said.

"I would encourage him to make the right decision."
