Bridge is in troubled waters

IS THERE a hex on the Helen Street footbridge at South Golden Beach?

The project to create walking access to the beach for residents living on the western side of the Capricornia Canal has had plenty of false starts since it was first granted conditional development consent in 2005.

Now, just as residents were so close to their dream of walking to the beach, the project has, almost literally, hit another snag.

Queensland-based contractors Devbridge have locked up their site gates and left the area after it was discovered the footings of the bridge would have disturbed a Telstra cable.

Byron Shire Council's director of asset management services, Phil Holloway, said the discovery meant the project required a design modification to place the bridge three metres to the south.

Work cannot proceed until a new permit is issued by the Department of Primary Industries (Fisheries) and the Department of Climate Change, Environment and Water.

He said the council had been working off surveys of the site which had been carried out about six years ago and it was an 'oversight on council's behalf'.
