Brett Wilkie wins a marathon Summerland Singles

BRETT WILKIE won the Summerland Singles bowls title at Ballina yesterday in one of the closest finals the event has seen.

Wilkie (Helensvale) defeated Shannon Gittoes (Musgrave Hill) 31-29 to win the first major title of the year.

Wilkie looked confident and strong early and led by several shots after eight ends.
But Gittoes pegged him back to match him at 14-all.

The pair then traded shot-for-shot for the rest of the game in a quality display of bowls before Wilkie pulled away to win the final, which took 3½ hours to complete.

In the quarter-finals, Gittoes and Joey Mills (Redland Bay) had little trouble disposing of their respective opposition, Kris Lehfeldt (Pottsville) and Steve Piggott (McKenzie Park).

But in the other quarter-finals Wilkie and Ken Evans (Musgrave Hill) scraped through to the semis by the narrowest of margins.

Wilkie lived up to his nickname of ‘Whizza’ in defeating Joel Bourke (Kempsey Heights) in the semi-final.

Bourke led 24-21 at the 26th end and looked on track for an upset until Wilkie won the next three ends to clinch the match by the slimmest of margins, 25-24.

It was even tighter in the Ken Evans-Brian Baldwin (both Musgrave Hill) match where the lead changed four times.

Baldwin at one stage had an eight-shot lead and led 23-19 after 25 ends. But he lost the next four ends to go down 25-23.

Gittoes’ semi-final boilover of Mills 25-5set up the final between he and Wilkie, who was far too strong for Evans in their semi-final, winning 25-13.
