Brendan Cleaver named All-Star

TALENTED all-rounder Brendan Cleaver was recently named in the Australian All-Stars Under-16 Indoor Cricket side, but his state coach Steve Carmody is fearful he will never reach his full potential in the indoor version of the game.

“He could quite easily progress through and play for the Australian Open Indoor side in the future, but I think he will get sidetracked with outdoor representative duties,” Carmody said.

The Grafton local recorded the best statistics for New South Wales in the recent National Championships held in Melbourne, taking 10 wickets for 61 runs from his 16 overs bowled at the tournament and scoring 125 runs with the bat.

“Brendan was our go-to man with the ball and he took wickets when we really needed them,” Carmody said.

“He was probably our most consistent player and is a great all-round talent.

“He’s an exceptional fielder, a very solid bat and was our main strike bowler in the tournament.”

Cleaver’s All-Star Under-16 side won’t tour South Africa with the Under 19’s side this year, but Carmody believes it is only a matter of time before Cleaver is honoured with bigger representative honours.

“He is very solid under pressure and is a highly consistent performer,” Carmody said.

“As a coach, and a selector, he is a perfect choice for any side.

“The big thing as far as his indoor career goes will be how his outdoor cricket progresses.

“But a lot of Australia’s best cricketers, including Steve and Mark Waugh and Michael Clark were all New South Wales Indoor players before they made it to the NSW Sheffield Shield side.”

Cleaver seemingly has the cricketing world at his feet but Carmody doesn’t believe the attention will go to the youngster’s head.

“He has a very businesslike attitude, and not only has the style to play at higher levels, but also has the temperament,” he said.

CLEAVER’S NSW INDOOR STATISTICS

BOWLING- 10 wickets for 61 runs from 16 overs.
