Breakers win an overtime thriller

THE Ballina Breakers have made a triumphant return to State League basketball, pipping powerhouse Tamworth by two points in an overtime thriller on Saturday night.

On their home court, the Breakers led by 16 points in the third term but went to sleep and let the Thunderbolts back into the game.

Tamworth had a chance to win with a pair of free throws in the closing seconds, but made only one to send the match to overtime.

The Breakers, led by James Whitby (22 points), again pulled away only to surrender a winning margin in the final moments.

In the final two minutes the lead see-sawed with neither side releasing the pressure.

With three seconds remaining and the scores tied, Breakers swingman Dario Streble drove to the hoop, drew a foul and nailed both shots from the stripe to seal a memorable first-up victory.

Big man Jayden Hetherington dominated the post at both ends to record a double-double of 16 points and 12 rebounds.
