Breakers dunk win

A RETURNING James Whitby helped lead the Ballina Breakers open men's basketball team to a commanding 93-52 victory against the Armidale Lions at Southern Cross K-12 on Saturday night.

Ballina shot away to a 16-4 lead early and maintained the intensity with Whitby scoring 25 points at shooting guard. The 19-year-old has just returned from a stint playing college basketball in the US.

“James was a bit rusty at the start but he really turned it on towards the end,” coach Marty Smith said.

“Our shot selection was better this week.”

Whitby was well assisted by veteran utility Michael Baggaley (19 points) and wing Jesse Coates (16).

“It's good to see our experienced blokes leading by example,” Smith said.

“We still need to concentrate on our shot selection, there were times in the game where guys were shooting when they were marked three on one.”

The Breakers are fourth and will need to win the majority of their remaining games to make the finals.

They face a tough task at home next weekend against an undefeated Tamworth side.

The Lady Breakers will return to action after having the weekend off.

Games start from 10am.
