Bowditch bags spot on PGA Tour by passing qualifying test

PEREGIAN Beach's Steven Bowditch re-claimed his card for the coveted US PGA Tour after surviving the cut-throat qualifying school in California this morning.

The 29-year-old, who led the field through five rounds, carved a sixth-round score of two-over-par 74 to finish in a share for 10th place on 21-under-par.

The top-25 result ensured he regained full-time playing rights on the world's most lucrative golf scene again after a disappointing 2012 campaign in which he held only part-time status.

Bowditch's former coach, Peter Heiniger, believed the renowned big hitter had the potential to win a tour event but said it was crucial for him to consolidate his spot on the elite circuit next year.

"I think it's important he actually gets off to a good start to the season because if he doesn't do anything in the first six months there will obviously be a bit of pressure in the last six months," he said.

"If he can just get something under his belt then the rest of the year will be a lot easier.

Bowditch's compatriot, Matt Jones, also secured his full-time card after finishing in a tie for 14th on 20-under, five strokes behind winner Dong-hawn Lee, of South Korea.
