Mary Ryan's owner Leanne Grundon said the initial panic felt by book store owners had wavered as a devoted clientele kept coming back.

"Obviously, there will be some kind of impact in the future with current and future generations becoming more involved with technology, but right now I feel confident with what is happening," she said.

Mrs Grundon said there were plans in the pipeline to integrate ebooks into the Mary Ryan's in store experience.

Debbie Hogan, who owns popular Toowoomba book exchange A Novel Experience, said both ebooks and traditional books had their place among today's readers.

"E-readers have their good points like they are lightweight and perfect for travelling. But I think we will also see a resurgence in purchasing older publications people wish to keep in their personal libraries," she said.
