Book review: Wolfhound Century

BOOK: Wolfhound Century
AUTHOR: Peter Higgins
PUBLISHER: Hachette Aust
RRP: $29.99

IF you're looking for a story that's fast-moving, thrilling, brutal, violet, dark and intriguing, Wolfhound Century is the book for you.

Peter Higgins' debut novel is set in a grim totalitarian state (or an alternative Russia) and follows complicated and lonely police officer Vissarion Lom.

Vissarion is plunged into a seemingly hopeless mission to track down a shadowy master criminal in the capital city, but it's soon clear there is a far bigger story to be told.

He's been chosen because he's an outsider, but Lom soon discovers a hotbed of corruption, secrets and revolutionaries.

Soon he's pursued by rogue police agents, determined to protect a girl who has discovered an ancient secret that only the forest remembers.

And it's here we start to realise that this world Higgins has wonderfully plunged us into, isn't like our own.

For deep in an ancient forest lies the latest fallen angel - there's been a war in heaven and angels have fallen to earth - and as its dark energy leeches into the site where it crashes, so a circle of death expands around it.

I really liked the short, punchy chapters that kept this compelling story moving apace.

There were many supernatural creatures and some unexpected plot twists.

The violence was a bit unsettling, but Wolfhound Century was a compelling book I really enjoyed.

The only problem I had was that after a strong build-up to a climax, it ended abruptly - I badly wanted more.

Thank goodness the follow-up is due next year.
