Book inspired by WWI photo

A CHANCE discovery of an old photo of soldiers from Casino in Egypt during World War I gave author John Hendley the idea for his book titled ' Around Casino for threepence'.

"I realised that no one alive may have seen this photo," he had said to the Express Examiner in an interview back in September 2013 when he received a grant to publish the book.

"And I wondered how many stories were out there."

The Casino & District Historical Society will launch the 200-page book at Casino Library, Graham Place, Casino, on Armistice Day, November 11 at 9am.

"It is to be the society's contribution to commemorate Casino's involvement in the First World War," Mr Hendley said.

"The book covers the events and personalities, generosity and sacrifices made in the town during the period, along with stories of our local volunteers, from their enlistments to the homecomings.

"There are also chapters on the 'flu epidemic which killed 46 people locally and of the killer storm that devastated the town shortly after."

Members of the public are invited to attend the book launch and copies will be for sale at $20 each.
