Ballina Bombers too strong for Lismore Swans in AFL clash

THE scoreboard may have flattered the Ballina Bombers but they secured four vital premiership points with a home win over the Lismore Swans in local Aussie Rules on Saturday.

The Bombers won 14.6 (90) to 6.6 (42) at Fripp Oval.

The Swans won the toss and ran with a four-goal wind at their backs, kicking two goals in the first eight minutes.

Lismore looked the goods with best-on-ground Shaun King dominating every contest with strength and skill.

In a strange twist, the Bombers found some run late in the quarter and against the run of play kicked three goals to takea three-point advantage into the first change.

The skilful Tommy Merritt scored early for the Swans in the second quarter and it was game on again.

Bombers coach Steve Huckerby, with the luxury of Pete Plummer in the forwards, switched Tim Price to the midfield with immediate results.

King, Mitch Grivens, Will Alexander and Zack Cottorell gave everything for Lismore but the Bombers kicked five goals and almost iced the game.

The Swans again dominated much of the second half but coach Phil Tsourlinous will work hard on execution and delivery into the forward line.

Swans player and assistant coach Sean Holland lamented the result.

"We were great for much of the game but too much uncontested ball in the Ballina forward line crucified us," he said.

For the Bombers, Kris Davis dominated in the ruck and the evergreen Sam Kennedy was superb.

In the other game, Byron Magpies outclassed the Robina Roos 22.18 (150) to 2.3 (15) on the Gold Coast on Friday night.

Tweed Coast had the bye.
