Evans Head Bombers on target to reach top of ladder

EVANS Head continued its charge towards the top of the ladder with a 22-18 win over Cudgen in Northern Rivers Regional Rugby League at the weekend.

The Bombers held on for the four-point win after initially leading 16-0 in the first half at Ned Byrne Field, Kingscliff.

"We were just happy to get out of there with the two points," coach Luke Turner said.

"We lost Al Campbell and had a few other key players out with injury.

"It was a pretty gutsy effort from our guys in the end.

"Jack Wythes played 80 minutes and would have made almost 50 tackles for us.

"He has just been chopping blokes in half with his defence.

The Bombers did it without props Josh Cook and Tim Tregidgo.

Eli Cook, Jack Wythes, Jared Waters and Matt Toole have stepped up in their absence.

The Bombers are back at home against Kyogle on Saturday and still have a catch-up game against Byron Bay scheduled for June 5 at Red Devil Park, Byron Bay.

"The boys are gaining confidence and the numbers at training have been outstanding," Turner said.

"It's important you bounce back from a loss quickly in this competition.

"The way the ladder is at the moment a couple of good teams will miss out at the end of the year."

In other games, competition leaders Murwillumbah jumped two points clear on the ladder after a 44-6 win against Lower Clarence at the Maclean Showground.

The Mustangs are the only unbeaten side in the competition after Casino accounted for Northern United 20-10 at Oakes Oval, Lismore.

Ballina won its third consecutive game running out 40-18 winners against Mullumbimby at Les Donnelly Field, Mullumbimby.

The Seagulls have a bye this weekend before a big home game against Murwillumbah the following Sunday.

Elsewhere, Marist Brothers won its second game of the season 56-24 against Kyogle at New Park, Kyogle.

The Rams head to Mullumbimby this weekend with the Giants desperate for a win at home.
