Boaties dim on lights

NSW Maritime is ‘disappointed’ that 13 out of 187 boats spot-checked on the North Coast as part of Operation Lights On last weekend failed to comply.

Boating safety officers checked almost 800 boats up and down the NSW coast over the two-day operation, focusing on the use of navigation lights.

The poor North Coast result compared with Sydney’s, where only one boat failed out of 161 checked.

“This compared with 13 failures from 187 checks on the North Coast and six failures from 145 checks on the South Coast, which is a disappointing result,” general manager recreational boating Brett Moore said.

A total of 13 fines and 17 warnings were issued on the North Coast during the exercise.
