Boat sinks killing seven, 20 missing

AT least seven asylum seekers have drowned after the boat they were travelling in sank soon after they left a port in Central Java bound for Australia.

It is believed the death toll could rise, with authorities saying they were still searching for more than 20 people.

Two young boys are among those confirmed dead.

The boat, which left from Cilacap in the early hours of Tuesday morning, was carrying about 70 asylum seekers who are believed to have travelled to Indonesia from the Middle East.

It sank about 5am local time (0900 AEDT) after taking on water for about two hours.
