12 metre cruiser catches fire off Ballina coastline

A boat that caught fire just off Ballina this morning was close to where Marine Rescue NSW Ballina unit were training and the crew were able to respond within two minutes.

Marine Rescue NSW Northern Rivers region controller Stephen Reading said the fire started in the engine room of a 12 metre cabin cruiser just off the Ballina bar.

"Because its a closed space in the engine room the people on the cruiser used their on-board suppression system to put out the fire," he said.

"Our Ballina crew were actually out doing a training session and operational assessment and they were there within two minutes.

"They got to the vessel, assessed it and told the people on board they would tow them to Ballina straight away."

Mr Reading said a NSW Maritime vessel that responded to the incident guided the Marine Rescue boat across the Ballina bar.

"They then towed the cruiser up to the Fawcett St wharf where NSW Fire and Rescue were on standby to do a final inspection on the boat," he said.

Police were also called to Fawcett St wharf regarding the boat fire.

No people on board the cruiser were injured by the fire.
