Boardwalk tribute for Lennox man

FRED Goodman couldn't think of a more fitting tribute to the late Brian Smith.

On Friday, January 13, the timber boardwalk at Lennox Head, leading north from the end of Dress Circle Drive will be named after Mr Smith, who was president of the Lennox Head Residents Association for 20 years.

He died in August last year, aged 78.

Mr Goodman is the current president of the association.

"We felt something needed to be done to commemorate the 20 years (Mr Smith) dedicated, and we couldn't think of a better way to do it," he said. "Mr Smith did many things.

"One of the things that was dear to his heart was this boardwalk."

Mr Goodman said Mr Smith, a former industrial arts high school teacher, came to the association meeting with some plans for the boardwalk linking the village's centre to Lennox Point about 10 years ago. The boardwalk was built nine years ago.

"He said: 'This is what we need'.

"He persisted until he got the council working with him. (The boardwalk) has added a great deal to the people who walk - the pathway is as busy as Pitt St (Sydney)."

The official naming of the boardwalk will be held on what would have been Mr Smith's birthday - Friday, January 13 - at the end of Dress Circle Drive at 10am and will be followed by a morning tea.
