Boardwalk to be open by Christmas

IT'S good and not so good. The Lighthouse Road boardwalk will be open next Friday, December 23, but the road will still be one lane until the New Year.

Byron Shire Council community infrastructure executive manger Phil Holloway said, unfortunately, rain had delayed the repair works, but it would be great to have the pedestrian boardwalk back in action for visitors during the holiday season.

"Work will resume on the road on Friday 6 January and it is expected to take around a couple of weeks.

"Landscaping will also occur during this time.

"The contractors on the project have done their best to get the work completed by Christmas, but the rain over the past few weeks has made it impossible."

At a cost of $2.9million, the Lighthouse Road works include the construction of a reinforced soil slope, reconstruction of elevated boardwalk and site re-vegetation and restoration.

The Lighthouse Road restoration works are a result of a major landslip on 30 June 2005 which saw the road and walkway collapse.
