Boardriders signal revamp of competition attitude

BYRON Bay Boardriders (BBB) are ringing in some changes for 2016 in the run-up to sign-on from 5pm this Friday, January 29 at JS Surfboards' new shop on Fletcher St.

JS team riders, including ex-world champion Joel Parkinson and WSL ranked #19 Ace Buchan, will be on hand, along with other special guests.

New president Neil Cameron takes over from Jenny King after four years of stellar service, and legendary local surfer Danny Wills will manage the BBB teams for inter-club competitions this year.

"Willsy will bring his 20-plus years of competitive experience to bear to help Byron Boardriders bring home trophies from events like the Kirra Teams Challenge, Straddie Assault, Australian Boardriders Challenge," said Mr Cameron.

"We have won several of these events in the past and finished well last year but we are looking to get back on the podium.

Mr Cameron said the BBB would also be changing up the awards for club champions in several categories.

"Club champion will once again win cash and a surfboard from JS Surfboards, and surfboards and prizes will also be on offer for club champions in other classifications," he said.

"We have classifications ranging from Fleas through to the Over-50s and this includes women's and girls' divisions.

"The club is inviting members of the local community to join in and have a go with us this year."

One thing that hasn't changed is the BBB's commitment to fostering community values and friendships while teaching competitive skills to assist Byron Bay surfers who wish to pursue a career in surfing.

The club also raises funds to support the club's junior programs and to give back to those in the community who need a helping hand.

Sign-on will also feature prizes, barbecue and a DJ. For more go to: http://byron bayboardriders.com
