Blue Mountains communities remain under fire threat

A COMMUNITY in the NSW Blue Mountains remained under direct threat from one of 76 fires still burning across the state on Thursday night.

Back-burning was carried out earlier in the day but strong winds prompted the NSW Rural Fire Service to upgrade the alert.

The blaze, which had burned through 1050ha of bushland, was breaching containment lines at Winmalee and Hawkesbury Heights.

Firefighters and police were expected to hold a community meeting at the local high school.

Three other major fires burning in the Sydney region earlier this week were contained on Thursday.

Across the state, 19 blazes remained out of control but no properties outside of the Blue Mountains were under threat.

More than 1200 firefighters were on duty.
