Blue-green algae alert for Casino boat ramp

A RED alert for potentially toxic blue-green algae in the Richmond River at the Casino boat ramp has been issued by the Richmond Valley Council.

The council says the town water supply is fully treated and remains safe for human consumption.

However, people should stay out of the river and should not drink untreated water or bathe in water taken from the river.

"If water is ingested, or individuals come in contact with the water at red alert levels, there is risk to health and it is advised to seek medical attention," the council says.

"Children and people with pre-existing health problems are most at risk. People might also experience diarrhoea and skin irritations."

The water is also unsuitable for stock watering and may result in death of livestock.

Any fish caught should be cleaned and washed and internal organs disposed of.
