Blakboi hungry for new music stages to discover

SINGER songwriter Tom Avery, also known as Blakboi, will be taking his music further away and will be venturing into new places this year.

With support from the New South Wales Government, APRA AMCOS is discovering and nurturing the careers of Aboriginal musicians in NSW through a program called Starting Ground, which Tom Avery is part of.

The project aims to help Aboriginal musicians build their skills, promote their work and access mainstream music markets.

Avery said the program has offered him a number of new opportunities.

"Through Starting Ground I have been getting mentoring from Leah Flanagan, who is a great Darwin artist," he said.

"This APRA mentorship for upcoming indigenous artists has got me working in new releases and getting more shows on the road."

Blakboi explained part of the work he is doing is about perfecting his on-stage sound.

"I am trying to get more electronic in my sets, working on a new sound," he explained.

"I've got a new single called Let's Take It Back to the Dance Floor, and I'll be recording it in Sydney this year with people like Neil Sutherland, musical director for Sarah Blasko."

Another focus for Tom Avery is to take his music further away.

The artist has music gigs in Perth and Tasmania this April, plus an East Coast tour ending in Melbourne in May.

"I am focusing a lot of energy in the tour coming up," he said.

After a show at the skiing fields at Perisher in June, July and August will see Blakboi travel to shows in Canada and New Zealand.

"My shows are getting better so people are starting to hear more about my music and getting more opportunities."
