Blackbird takes flight for Sultan

BLACKBIRD, Dan Sultan's second album, is a fantastic continuation from his debut Get Out While You Can.

Blackbird debuted at #4 in Australia and Under Your Skin, the first single, has received great reviews.

The past few months have seen the award-winning Melbourne artist deliver smouldering live performances - both in support of Bruce Springsteen and on his own 'Under Your Skin' headline dates

We asked Dan Sultan about this new album on the wake of his upcoming visit to Byron Bay.

Do you consider Blackbird urban, folk, country, rock'n'roll, pop, or a bit of all of them?

I think it's always hard to find a music label. If I have to call it something I'll just call it rock'n'roll. It's a very broad term and it can mean a lot of things, especially these days.

When rock'n'roll first started, it was meant to be a very specific thing but now it means a whole bunch of things.

I do agree with you that there are bits and pieces of urban and other elements in this album.

There is even a banjo used in some of the song's arrangements, right?

Yes. (Laughs) That's in the mix as well. It's hard to pin down.

Is that how you find your own sound and your own voice?

I suppose. It's not a deliberate thing. I have always written and played the music that I wanted to. This is what it turned out. I never really wanted to do anything different, left field or traditionally rock'n'roll.

Is there any specific story behind any of these songs?

There is one called Kimberley Calling that is my next single. It's about taking a beautiful boat trip in the Kimberley, in north Western Australia.

That was a really good time with some friends in a boat for a week.

I won't forget that in a hurry.

The Kimberley is a unique place in this country.

I love the Kimberley. There are a lot of beautiful places in this country. I love the desert, the ocean and the rainforest. The Kimberley and the people from there are really lovely. I have people there that I consider family.

Aesthetically, it is one of the most beautiful places in the world.

Dan Sultan will be playing on Tuesday, July 8 at The Northern, Byron Bay.
