Black Friday claims three road deaths

FRIDAY marked a horror day on North Coast roads with three fatal car accidents occurring within 24 hours.

At about 10.20pm on Friday a Holden Barina heading north on the Pacific Highway at St Helena crashed head-on into a Mitsubishi Lancer.

The Barina driver, a 37-year-old Queensland man, died at the scene while the driver of the Lancer, a 25-year-old woman from Queensland, sustained minor injuries and was taken to Tweed Heads Hospital.

Earlier, at about 2.30pm, 84-year-old Edward Paterson, of Kingscliff, was killed when a Holden Commodore he was travelling in crashed into a guard rail on the Pacific Highway at Ewingsdale.

At 9.50am that day police were called to Kerr Street in Ballina, where an 83-year-old Queensland man had sideswiped two cars before hitting a power pole.

Police suspect the man had a heart attack, but an inquest will be held.
