Julie Bishop slams Federal Govt over foreign aid funds move
KEY Coalition figure Julie Bishop attacked the Federal Government on Tuesday over its movement of more than $370 million from the foreign aid budget to fund offshore detention centres.
On Tuesday the government confirmed it had moved some $375 million from foreign aid to help fund Australia's offshore asylum-seeker program.
Ms Bishop said the Gillard Government was now the third largest recipient of its own foreign aid.
"The people smugglers now have more control over Labor's budget than the Gillard Government does," she said.
Ms Bishop made the comments after Labor frontbencher Brendan O'Connor told Sky News he was comfortable with the budget change.
Foreign Minister Bob Carr told ABC News the budget change was within budget guidelines.
The government has not confirmed which specific program the funds would be moved from.
