THE Ballina Dragons took out the 10km dragon boat race on the Tweed River from Condong to Murwillumbah.

Ballina raced with a 20-seat mixed crew of men and women.

Two 200m sprint legs were included in the event and Ballina also won one of those.

Other competing teams were from Broadwater, Akuna, the Gold Coast and Rainbow Dragons.

On a perfect day for racing on the river, Ballina started neck-and-neck with Broadwater and after the first 500 metres settled into a good stroke and rhythm to gradually pull away.

Ballina led for the whole race and crossed the finish line 44 seconds aheadof their nearest rivals.

The Ballina Dragons club was formed only last year and several members are new to the sport, focusing on health and fitness, camaraderie, socialisation and friendship. New members are welcome.
