Big shark seen off Wategos

A LARGE shark has been spotted swimming at the western end of Wategos Beach, Byron Bay, according to surfers.

About eight surfers were in the water late on Monday night when a two-metre shark swam between them. It’s rumoured the shark has been swimming around the location for several days.

State manager and chief lifeguard for the Australian Lifeguard Service, Stephen Leahy, said no reports of sharks had been received.

“We hear regularly that surfers see sharks but a lot of the time they don’t tell us,” he said. “If there’s no lifeguard on the beach, surfers should contact police and they will contact us via the statewide Emergency Response Network.”
