Big crowd farewells Felsch

ALMOST 500 people attended the funeral of long-serving Ballina councillor, John Felsch, this morning.

Mr Felsch died on February 23 after a short battle with cancer.

His son, David, told mourners that his father was a hard worker who cared about his local community.

"Dad taught us well. He used to say, 'Do as I say, not as I do," David said.

"He created a whirlwind wherever he went, so our nickname for him was Cyclone John.

"Dad loved his place. He was very proud of his heritage. The house he grew up in (at Keith Hall) was 100m from the one he died in."

Mr Felsch's brother, Arthur, said John found he "could have great fun pushing people's buttons".

John Felsch served as an alderman and councillor for the Ballina Shire for a total of 32 years.

North Coast mayors including David Wright, Jenny Dowell, Col Sullivan and Ernie Bennett were at the funeral, as well as Page MP Janelle Saffin.
