Beware of Pop up No Stopping signs in Ballina
I promptly went down to the park/beach area, to see where the "No Stopping" signs were that I had supposedly parked near. They weren't there, none, nowhere to be seen anywhere along Kingsford Smith Drive. Mystified, I obviously appealed. But the Office Of State Revenue concluded that the penalty still applied as there was photographic evidence of my offence. I eventually received, from Ballina Council, a photo of a sign on the opposite side of the road, pointing in the opposite direction to my car, plus a drawing of proposed 'No Stopping' signs! (No photographic evidence of signs on my side of the road)
I was gobsmacked as there are no signs there and all I could think was that it had been photoshopped in! Eventually, I was told that the signs were put up for the charity day and taken down after the event. A conniving money making ploy to say the least!
Can we be lead to believe from this that we all need to be extra vigilant for random pop up signs when going to charity days, markets, or just a great family day at the beach or park?
I was parked safely off of the road, not causing a hazard, with many other cars.
Ballina Council have just told me to go back to The Office of State Revenue, who tell me I have to take my appeal to court, I can't afford to do that...It looks like they have me over a barrel and I will be paying a crippling $236 fine.
I would be interested to hear who else has experienced this problem in Ballina.
I hasten to add that since then, the parking area has been tidied up, probably with funds made from the charity day parking tickets. And still there are no "No Stopping" signs in this area!
