Best retro movies to watch this week

A one-line guide of some of the highlights in retro movies on the small screen this week


Remember the Titans (7mate, 8.30pm) - Black or white... it doesn't really matter when you can play football. 

  • Why watch it? Danzel Washington, who is closing in on the height of his acting fame, plays head coach Herman Boone.  The tension building on-field scene.

Scarface (One, 9.30pm) - You have to be vicious, borderline psychopathic, if you want to control the cocaine trade in Miami.   

  • Why watch it? People know some of the lines from  the movie even if they have never heard of Scarface.  Al Pachino's character Tony Montana is a culture icon.


Gallipoli (One, 8.30pm) - Spirit is a great weapon in war against an enemy that has better position and better resourced.

  • Why watch it?  Probably one of Australia's best directors at the time, Peter Weir, takes on one of the most engaging Australian stories of all time.


Dune (Nine, 11.30pm) -  Think Game of Thrones set 10,000 years in the future were distant planets replace distant lands.

  • Why watch it? There is nothing else like it, but then what could you expect from film director David Lynch.

The Birdcage (GEM, 8.30pm) - Gay and conservative lifestyle collide under the one roof, and above a gay nightclub.

  • Why watch it? Hilarious scenes, such as when Armand Goldman attempts to teach his lover Albert to "be a man" or when decorations on a plate grab the attention of the whole dinner party.


Field of Dreams (Seven, 2.30pm) - The banks might take your home and your farm, but hold onto those dreams and you will be okay.

  • Why watch it? Inspiring stuff from Kevin Costner when he was at his most inspired.

High Society (Gem, 3.45pm) - It's a love triangle that doesn't turn nasty, and the closes Americans get to British bedroom farce.

  • Why watch it?  Bing Crosby, Grace Kelly and Frank Sinatra in an American musical comedy.  It's like the right ingredients for your favourite meal.
