Bennett may take up England role

Brisbane Broncos chairman Dennis Watt says he doubts the club's board would block any move by its six-time premiership coach Wayne Bennett to accept a position with England's Four Nations team at the end of the 2016 NRL season.

Commenting on reports Bennett, overlooked for the Australian Kangaroos job last December when Mal Meninga was appointed Tim Sheens' successor, will have talks with English rugby league officials next month, Watt said he had not made any formal approach to the club's board.

The meeting will take place when Bennett is in the UK with the Broncos next month to play Wigan as part of the World Club Series.

It remains unclear whether Bennett would replace England coach Steve McNamara, who recently won a Test series over New Zealand, or take a role as assistant, similar to the 2008 World Cup when he helped Kiwis coach Stephen Kearney plot an upset win over the Kangaroos to claim the title.

"Wayne has an incredible coaching appetite and has always been supportive of doing anything that will help rugby league grow," Watt told APN. "I would imagine if he was to seek the board's approval to coach England, it would be forthcoming, but it is all hypothetical at the moment."

The main issue for Brisbane would be if England had a mid-year Test match, but Watt said if Bennett could convince the board he could do both jobs, there was unlikely to be a problem.

If Bennett did agree to take the job, it would put him up not only against Meninga, but also Kiwis coach Kearney, his assistant at the Broncos.

England recently turned to former Wallabies coach Eddie Jones to lead their rugby union side, while former NSW batsman Trevor Bayliss took over its cricket side last year.
