Beef Week is powering on
THIS year's Casino Beef Week Queen, Rebecca Scofield, is thrilled that Beef Week has secured much-needed sponsorship from Country Energy for at least the next three years and will definitely go ahead in 2009.
“I hope it goes on forever, because it is such a great community event,” a beaming Rebecca said. “I'd also like to encourage young women to enter because it's a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and they won't regret it.”
Rebecca - who is a single mother - said that entering the Beef Week Queen contest improved your self-esteem and public speaking skills and also enhanced your job prospects.
“It looks awesome on your CV,” she said.
Rebecca said becoming Queen proved that life didn't come to a halt when you became a mum.
As part of her Beef Week experience, Rebecca appeared in a documentary film on the festival, to be screened later this year. “The crew came out to my boyfriend's place and followed me around for the day. It was a lot of fun,” she said.
Rebecca would also like to see next year's Queen entrants return to the practice of earlier years when they represented a cattle breed.
“I would have loved to represent the Angus breed, because I grew up on an Angus property and my grandparents were passionate about that breed,” she said.
Richmond Valley Council Mayor Charlie Cox was also delighted at news of the Country Energy sponsorship deal.
“The whole town will welcome the news,” he said. “It's a great event that clearly relates to the whole economics of the area. So many people rely on it,” he said.
“Any successful community needs a successful festival and one that reflects its community.”
It was decided unanimously at a festival committee meeting on Tuesday night the 2009 Country Energy Casino Beef Week Festival would definitely proceed.
A Beef Week spokeswoman said this year's festival even managed to turn a small profit.
Beef Week did not go ahead last year and The Northern Star launched a community campaign to resuscitate the festival. As well as Country Energy, other sponsors have pledged support.
The proposed dates for Casino Beef Week 2009 are from May 26 to June 2.
