Beach reopens after shark ‘tried to bite’ surfer

BROKEN Head beach was closed this morning after a surfer reported that a 3-4 metre long shark had tried to bite him.

Tony Anstee from the Shark Reports Facebook page said the surfer reported the shark approached him, but he didn't have further details.

"The word in the water was that the shark went towards somebody," he said.

Local surf lifesavers did try to clear the beach after the shark sighting was reported to them, but plenty of swimmers and surfers remained in the water, duty officer Jimmy Keogh said.

A jet ski was sent out to search for the shark but no further sightings were reported.

A short time later, at approximately 11am, the beach was re-opened.
