Beach-goers warned of dangerous conditions

DANGEROUS surf continues as a woman who got caught in dangerous waves between Wategos beach and the Pass at Byron Bay was brought to shore with the aid of local surfers this morning.

Surf lifesavers were informed by Police at 7.20am that a woman was caught in the surf and being battered against the rocks.

When local surf lifesavers arrived on scene the woman had been brought to shore by local surfers.

She was treated at the scene for cuts and abrasions before being taken to Byron Bay Hospital for further treatment, SLS duty office Jimmy Keogh said.

The swell on Monday was at 1.5 to 2.0 metres and even though it was expected to drop to 1.0 to 1.5 metres over Australia Day, conditions would still be dangerous he said.

South Golden beach, Pottsville, Tallow, Sharpes, Lighthouse, Evans Head and Yamba main beach have all been closed today.

Life guards will be on duty across the region over Australia Day he said.

Swimmers should only swim between the flags at patrolled beaches, he said.
