Battling mother of three waits for transplants

KATHY Abbott is tough.

Her story is as inspiring as it is heartbreaking. In desperate need of a kidney and pancreas transplant and suffering plenty of setbacks, she continues to fight.

The 30-year-old mother of three was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at five, and has battled debilitating illness ever since.

Belinda Donney raised Mrs Abbott since she was young, and is inspired every day by her "adopted daughter".

"Kathy has been in and out of hospital her entire life," Mrs Donney said. "I'm so proud of her and how she goes about her illnesses."

When she isn't in hospital, Mrs Abbott lives in Moranbah with her husband Chris, son Noah and twin daughters Emily and Phoebe.

Mrs Abbott said her husband had been a pillar of strength since they met more than 10 years ago.

"While his workmates would read their magazines on lunch breaks, Chris would read up on medical books and leaflets to help me manage my illness," she said.

Told she would never have children, Mrs Abbott said she has been blessed by her three children, all born premature and requiring immediate and ongoing medical care.

On a recent visit to Mrs Donney in Cairns, Mrs Abbott suffered a heart attack that has postponed the crucial transplant surgery.

"My glimmer of hope was gone," Mrs Abbott said.

Currently under supervision in Townsville, Mrs Abbott hopes soon to return home to Moranbah before embarking on another whirlwind journey to Sydney to receive the transplants.

"It's going to be hard for her to be in Sydney away from the kids, so we want to able to have them there for her," Mrs Donney said.

Mrs Abbott and her children's ongoing treatment and travel meant she required the help of friends, families and strangers.
