Battle lost but Ballina wins war

BALLINA, undefeated in eight rounds and seemingly out of sight with two rounds to go, did its best at its penultimate outing to give the other contenders for 2010’s top pennant a chance.

For the first time this season, Ballina’s seemingly unbeatable No 1 side was beaten – by Casino RSM, and by a comprehensive five points to one.

But even though there’s one round left with six points on offer, Ballina has won the flag. It has picked up 42 points in nine rounds, while Lennox Head has 34.5 to be in second place, 3.5 points ahead of Casino RSM.

Lennox Head scored five points against East Lismore in Round 9; and Evans Head also landed a fiver from South Lismore.

Souths made sure of the dreaded wooden spoon. In nine rounds it has scored only 10 points and tails East Lismore by eight points at the bottom end of the table. The Southies can’t do better than finish last and are prime candidates to spend next season in the No 2s.

Points with one round to go: Ballina 42, Lennox Head 34.5, Casino RSM 31, Evans Head 26.5, East Lismore 18, South Lismore 10.
