Barlows defeat Shaws Bay
CHRIS Jones and Jacob Stephenson showed composure under pressure to help keep Barlows Bolt Barn's undefeated record in tact in a thrilling Ballina District Cricket Twenty20 Premier League game on Friday night.
Northern Star 6-141 (K Ezzy 42, G Fleming 34, D Elphick 2/25, B Nurse 2/22) d Davey Pumps 140 all out (L Shay 62, N Collins 52, B Phipps 4/28, L Smith 3-26).
Barlows Bolt Barn 9-132 (A Gordon 24, B Robertson 18, T De Jong 3-26) d Shaws Bay 130 all out (B Crawford 77, S Jacobs 3-6, B Robertson 3-25).
With opponents the Shaws Bay Hotel desperate to record their first win of the competition, Jones and Stephenson steered home their side by scoring the last 13 runs needed for the final wicket.
"They got us out of jail," Bolt Barn captain Shane Jacobs said.
"We didn't bat well but that's the first time we put ourselves under pressure in that area."
Adam Gordon proved he is not just a freakish footballer with the Lennox Head rugby union playmaker contributing 24 handy runs with the bat for the Bolt Barners.
Northern Star also maintained their undefeated run with a four-wicket win over Davey Pumps.
The Pumpers were bowled out for 140.
In reply, the Star laid a good platform through the work of opening batsmen Kristiaan Ezzy (42) and George Fleming (34).
"Nathan Collins (52) and Luke Shay (62) put on 80 or 90 runs for them but then they lost about 8-15 with legspinner Barry Phipps taking four wickets for us," Star captain Steve Robb said.
"Barry plays second grade on Saturdays but he's been going well for us.
"He also took four wickets for us in our last game and he bowls with good flight and turn."
On Friday at 4.30pm Northern Star will play Barlows Bolt Barn with Davey Pumps to play Shaws Bay at 7.30pm.
Both matches are at Fripp Oval, Ballina.
