Bargain BMW 3 Series now starts from $50,900

GET set for the cheapest BMW 3 Series in nearly 15 years.

The BMW 316i will arrive in June priced from $50,900.

Under the bonnet will be a 1.6-litre TwinPower turbo four-cylinder petrol engine which generates 100kW of power at 4350rpm and 220Nm of torque at 1350rpm.

It will be armed with an eight-speed automatic transmission, and the powerplant will be good for a 0-100kmh sprint in 9.2 seconds. With standard auto stop/start, brake energy regeneration and ECO PRO mode, BMW says the new entry-level 3 Series will be able to deliver fuel consumption of 5.9 litres per 100 kilometres, while emitting just 137 grams of CO2 per kilometre.

Safety features include stability control, the active protection accident preparation program, six airbags, dynamic braking lights, anti-dazzle interior mirror and rain sensor with automatic headlight control.

BMW says the standard kit will include heat/sun protection glass, dual-zone climate control, Sensatec man-made leather upholstery, leather multi-function steering wheel, storage package, 40:20:40 split rear backrest and Radio Professional which includes 16.5cm display with iDrive controller and six programmable memory buttons as well as a USB audio interface.

"When you consider its generous standard specifications, the 316i represents the best value 3 Series sedan ever, and it will open the door to a new generation of BMW customers," BMW Australia Group's managing director Phil Horton said.

The new 316i sedan will be available in BMW Group Australia dealerships from June 2013.
