Bank bandit still at large

A KNIFE-WIELDING man remained at large yesterday after holding up a credit union in Casino.

The offender, believed to be in his early 20s, entered the Summerland Credit Union in Walker Street at 10.20am.

Richmond Local Area Command duty officer Insp Mick Dempsey said the man threatened a teller with the knife and demanded cash.

“He was given a sum of money and decamped,” he said.

Insp Dempsey would not confirm how much the man made off with.

He said there were a couple of witnesses who were inside the credit union at the time.

The offender was last seen heading towards the Bi-Lo supermarket in Canterbury Street.

He was wearing green or black track pants, a grey-hooded jumper, black and white joggers and was 168-170cm tall.

The bandit was armed with a 25-30cm knife.

The Northern Star understands one credit union employee was taken to hospital suffering from shock and all staff were offered counselling.

The Summerland Credit Union branch remained closed for the rest of the day.

A statement by Summerland Credit Union said no one was injured in the robbery.

“Summerland management are proud of the composure, dedication and extra effort provided by their dedicated staff at this difficult time and apologise to members for any disruption to member services,” the statement read.

An employee from McDon-alds Pharmacy in Walker Street said they didn't know the nearby business was robbed until a customer informed them.

“It always makes you think if something like that can happen there it can happen anywhere,” she said.

“Most of our customers were just surprised it happened.”
