Ballina’s Summer shines in a mermaid’s tail

BALLINA is well known for its aquatic life but rising screen star Summer Robertson is about to add a whole new species to the repertoire.

The 10-year-old actress will be appearing as one of the little mermaids in the upcoming season of Mako Island of Secrets (internationally Mako Mermaids) which will be released on Network Ten and Netflix this year.

Not able to give away too many of the upcoming season's secrets, Summer could confirm that she spent time filming on the beach and in the moon pool in her guest role as mermaid Ava.

"Her name is Ava and she's very clumsy because she falls over and splashes water all over herself a few times," Summer said.

Like most young girls, Summer confessed a love for everything to do with mermaids.

"I love swimming and I have got a little mermaid tail at home that I like to swim in in pools," she said.

"I've always wanted to be a mermaid."

Summer said she hopes to become well known for her acting and performing.

"I want to be like Helen Bonham Carter, she's my favourite actor," she said.

"I just like her because she works really hard and she's a really good actor and she can use different accents."

In addition to her stint as a Mako mermaid, Summer has also recently returned from filming in New Zealand with her sister Jessi Robertson, 8, for a feature length telemovie due to air in New Zealand later this year.

The sisters also worked on a short independent film together in Toowoomba at the start of the year called The Boggabilla Bus.

In total, Summer has completed 14 film roles, 11 commercials, three television series and countless commercial photographic campaigns for national and international brands.

Over the next to two weeks, the talented sisters will join their mum, Theresa-Anne Webb, filming of two national commercials, one for tourism and one for a health food product.

Ms Webb said Summer showed an interest from a very young age and both the girls were extremely supportive of each other.

"They often go for the same roles now, because they're in the same age bracket, but they're very supportive of one another," she said.

"They seem to understand why one gets it and one doesn't."

Summer's agent Charmaine Gilchrist, from Gilchrist Management, said the young actress had a mermaid's tail full of potential.

"Summer is certainly a star in the making," she said.
