Ballina's big bash

IT'S the Ballina Twenty20 cricket competition with the Indian Premier League flavour.

Four franchises - Shaws Bay Hotel, Barlows Ballina, Davey Pumps and Northern Star - will line up for eight Friday nights at Fripp Oval from November 11.

About 60 of the Far North Coast's best cricketers will play.

At the team selection night at the Shaws Bay Hotel on November 3 each of the four captains cannot consecutively pick a player from the same club.

"There should be a good mix of players and blokes will play alongside some guys they've never played with before," Ballina Bears club captain Shane Jacobs said.

Jacobs will captain one of the Twenty20 franchises and Brett Crawford (Tintenbar-East Ballina), Steve Robb (Alstonville) and Darren Wright (Byron Bay) the others.

"To play under lights on a Friday night will be exciting for us players and for the cricket fans out there too," Jacobs said.

"Twenty20 is the way cricket is heading and we don't want to be left behind.

"We'll have 60 quality players who will take part and it's great for those guys who can't commit to playing on Saturdays."

The semi-finals will be on February 10 and the final on February 24.

The Twenty20 idea is the Crawford's brainchild.

Interested players should call Jacobs 0401 211 929 or Crawford 0438 646 094.
