Ballina’s $20m Masters store back on agenda

A PROPOSAL to rezone land at West Ballina for a $20 million hardware superstore will be back before councillors next week, despite it having been refused last month.

Crs Keith Williams, Sharon Cadwallader and Robyn Hordern have signed a rescission motion.

It means the councillors will again debate the application to rezone a parcel of land at West Ballina which would facilitate the development of a Masters store.

Masters has repeatedly told the council it will not consider any other site in Ballina.

Last month's decision to refuse the rezoning was the result of a close vote, with five councillors voting for the refusal and four voting against it. Cr Paul Worth had declared an interest and did not vote.

Cr Williams said the close vote warranted another debate.

"We, as councillors, have continued to discuss the decision among ourselves since that meeting and many of us agree that the matter is still open," he said.

"I think we need to make sure we make the right decision."

Although he "argued strongly in favour" of rezoning, he agreed there were still issues to be resolved.

These include concerns the Masters store could impact on flooding.

"Moving forward with the rezoning would give us the opportunity to have those flood studies done," he said.

"It's possible this development could actually give us a chance to improve the drainage situation."
