Ballina Players and their Funny Money

FUNNY Money, a farce by Ray Cooney, is packed with robbery, drugs, escape attempts, sexual innuendo and mistaken identities.

Henry Perkins (Peter Harding) finds that he has picked up the wrong briefcase on the Underground. In the place of his half a cheese and chutney sandwich, he finds it packed with £735,000.

Henry tells his stunned wife Jean (Jaime Sheehan) that they are off to Barcelona. She objects, because they are expecting dinner guests Betty (Sheena Felton) and Vic (Dane Bodley) for his birthday. Jean moves steadily from drink to drink as pressures rise.

As time is of the essence, and Jean is neither sober nor dressed, Henry decides to take Betty to Barcelona instead.

The arrival of a policeman sends the couple into a spin, and they begin the lies which escalate. The stage is awash with friends, policemen and a cab driver coming and going and each being told a different story. The action races at a frenetic pace, with briefcases and their contents playing a big part - as does the fact that a body riddled with bullets and carrying Henry's briefcase has been found in the Thames.
